Former CIA agent Valerie Plame will speak about their haunting betrayal by the government as described in the book and film "Fair Game"
r
Valerie Plame Wilson, former covert CIA agent, and her husband, Joseph Wilson, a former U.S. ambassador, sued Vice President Dick Cheney, his former top aide "Scooter" Libby, and presidential adviser Karl Rove, claiming that they had conspired to destroy Plame Wilson's career by leaking her identity to the media. Wilson discredited the claim that Saddam Hussein was pursuing a nuclear weapons program by seeking to obtain uranium from Niger. Shortly after Wilson publicized his views, columnist Robert Novak identified Plame Wilson as a CIA agent. Our speakers are sponsored by Tom and Andra Ellingson.

What is Islamic (Sharia) Law? Is it barbaric? Backwards? Unjust? In Arabic, sharia literally means "path to the water source" and is used to describe
Islamic law. Sharia law is the legal framework that governs both public and private aspects of a Muslim's life, from diet to marriage to economics. As a
part of series events entitled, "Islam Awareness Month," the Muslim Student Union will be holding an event called "Explaining Sharia Law." Dr. Ammar
Kahf, (BA and MA in Islamic Jurisprudence, University of Amman, PhD in Islamic Studies, UCLA) will be giving a historic, academic, and contemporary
perspective on Islamic jurisprudence.

new Feb 25 Saturday 11am, Newport Beach:
Remembering a Champion of Equality, a Colleague, a Friend
A founding OCEC member, Katherine Darmer, passed away Friday.

A service will be held this Saturday, 25 February at
11:00 AM

St Mark's Presbyterian Church,
2200 San Joaquin Hills Road,
Newport Beach, CA 92660

If you knew Katherine, then there's no need to explain what's been lost. If you didn't, then know this: She fought for you even though she did not know you. Her's was the voice we heard that spoke against marriage inequality, gave us hope and guidance for the future, and helped form a better community. As a founding member of OCEC, she was integral not only in creating an organization that promotes equality, but also in establishing a progressive force in Orange County.

As a law professor at Chapman University, she was a respected educator who challenged her students to think critically. As a fellow activist, she used her knowledge and experience in the legal field to seek justice and create change for issues like marriage inequality and government sanctioned torture. As a person, she was a caring wife and mother, a brilliant and driven colleague, and a thoughtful and inspiring friend.

We are deeply saddened by this loss to our OCEC family. Katherine was a strong, courageous, and brilliant advocate for the LGBT community and she will truly be missed by us all. She has our eternal gratitude and love for everything she did and for being exactly who she was. Our hearts and thoughts go out to her family.

[Update] Feb 25 Saturday 6pm & 8:30pm, Santa Ana:
Stop Stealing Our Cars: The Documentary
Centro Cultural de Mexico (313 N. Birch Street, Santa Ana).

On May 1, 2011 the community of Santa Ana took to the streets to put a stop to the unjust impound practices. Stop Stealing Our Cars is the story of how the community came together through the power of art, music, and political will to fight for a common cause. The film documents the community's ourney toward a more just and fair policy, and shows the workings of a political system that would not easily give up a policy that generates millions in revenue for the state of California.

This is the premier screening of this documentary.
Stay for Q&A with the filmmakers and the Orange County May Day Coalition!)
